What We Do

January 28, 2006

What is therapeutic riding?

“The horse is a good master not only for the body, but also for the mind and the heart.” Xenophon – 435 B.C.E

The horse’s strength, warmth and soothing rhythm gently moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, therefore, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem.

The sense of independence, acceptance and unconditional love from the horse has proven to reduce anxiety, encourage interaction and offer a haven where riders can feel a sense of empowerment.

Our services are open to any child with a disability who can benefit from this special form of therapy. Our riders range in age from five to seventeen and come to us with a wide range of disabilities including:

ADDCerebral palsy
ADHDAutism
Developmental delaysScoliosis
Down syndromeStroke
Brain injuryEpilepsy
Learning disabilities

Lessons are individually designed to suit each rider's particular ability. We work with other medical professionals to achieve specific goals for each of our students.
